The first complete English translation of Jacob
Böhme
Jacob Böhme, The Works. London: Matthew Richardson & George Robinson, 1764-1781. 4to.
First complete edition in English of the German theosopher and Protestant mystic Jacob Böhme (1575-1624). Only one of his works was published during his lifetime, since he was not allowed to publish or even write anything after the manuscript of his first work (Aurora) had been confiscated. This edition is famous for the added layered illustrations, originally designed by Dionysius Andreas Freher (1649-1728), a German mystic and alchemist who lived in London most of his life. Additionally, all engraved illustrations in this copy are hand-coloured.
