Nacido en Amsterdam, Spinoza es conocido como el filósofo que propuso un concepto radicalmente distinto de Dios: no una deidad a la que rendir culto en la iglesia, sino uno idéntico a la propia naturaleza. En su época, estas ideas se consideraban heréticas y sus obras no podían imprimirse ni distribuirse. Como consecuencia, aparecieron de forma anónima y con una dirección de editor falsa, Hamburgo en lugar de Amsterdam.
Spinoza sigue siendo una figura de referencia para el mundo libre. Sus ideas sobre el papel del Estado siguen siendo de actualidad: el gobierno debe garantizar la paz, la libertad y el bienestar de sus ciudadanos.
